Powerflushing
Over time, central heating systems accumulate sludge, rust and debris. This build-up is a natural consequence of the chemical reactions that occur inside your pipework and radiators, and left untreated, it reduces the efficiency of your system, causes cold spots, increases the strain on your boiler and can shorten the lifespan of key components. A professional powerflush is the most effective way to restore your system to proper working order, and at Pettifer Plumbing and Heating, our Gas Safe registered engineers carry out this service using specialist equipment that thoroughly cleanses your heating system from the inside out.
Power flushing starts from £500 + VAT, with the final price depending on the type and size of your system. Larger gravity-fed systems with more radiators and a greater volume of pipework naturally take more time and chemical treatment than a smaller combi setup, and we’ll always give you a clear, itemised quote before starting work.

Signs Your Central Heating May Need a Powerflush
There are several indicators that your system has a significant build-up of sludge or debris. Cold spots at the bottom of one or more radiators are one of the most common signs, as settled sludge prevents hot water from circulating properly through the lower sections of the radiator. If your radiators take a long time to heat up, or some rooms feel noticeably cooler than others, restricted flow within the system is a likely cause.
Unusual noises from the boiler or pipework, such as banging, kettling or gurgling, can also point to debris or air trapped within the circuit. Discoloured water when you bleed a radiator is another clear sign, as healthy system water should be relatively clear. If your boiler is locking out repeatedly or overheating, sludge restricting flow may well be a contributing factor.
What the Power Flushing Process Involves
Our engineers connect a high-powered flushing unit to your heating system, which circulates water and a specially formulated chemical solution through the entire circuit at high velocity. This loosens and breaks down accumulated sludge, rust and scale, which is then flushed out of the system along with the contaminated water. Individual radiators are isolated and treated in turn to ensure a thorough clean, and the process is repeated until the water running through the system is clean and clear.
Once the flush is complete, a corrosion inhibitor is added to the system to protect your pipework and components going forward, significantly reducing the rate of future build-up. The whole process is carried out with minimal disruption, and your home is left clean and tidy on completion.
When a Powerflush Makes the Most Sense
A powerflush is particularly worthwhile when having a new boiler fitted, as most manufacturers recommend that the system is clean before commissioning to avoid voiding the warranty and to ensure the new appliance performs at its best. It is also an important consideration if your system has not been flushed before, if you have an older property with original pipework, or if any of the signs above apply to your heating. Regular power flushing can extend the life of your boiler and radiators, reduce energy consumption and help you avoid costly breakdowns.
